September 5, 1930 – “Seeing America Backwards” comes to an end

The names Charles Creighton and James Hargis probably doesn’t ring any bells, but they may put a kink in your neck, as these two completed a New York to Los Angeles and back journey in a Ford Model A on this day in 1930, oh, and they did it all in reverse gear. The nearly 7,200 journey across unpaved roads took 42 days and to make the trip even stranger, they never once turned off the vehicle, including during a 48 hour rest in Los Angeles. It is recorded that they set up a bed in the backseat of their Model A, allowing one man to drive and the other to sleep while they traveled. The issue of never turning the car off makes you wonder about filling up the gas tank with the motor running as well as changing the oil.
