Dusty & Rusty – 1973 Pontiac Firebird

Dusty & Rusty – 1973 Pontiac Firebird

If you've been channeling your inner Burt Reynolds, this car may be for you. While it is four years younger than the Firebird Trans Am that Reynolds out ran the smokies in, this car could make a great base for a replica. The seller of this 1973 Pontiac Firebird for sale on Craigslist in Portland, Oregon lists the car as a running, driving survivor with only 60,000 miles, though they recommend trailering it home. For a fairly firm $8,500, could this dusty and rusty Firebird be your next pet Phoenix? Nice neighbor! In 1973 Pontiac introduced the Super Duty 455 V8 that produced 310 horsepower as the top of the line engine for the Firebird. This car does not have that. It is equipped with a Pontiac 350 and is backed by an automatic trans. While not the most exciting driveline, it does ...

Dusty & Rusty – Henry J Custom “Corvette”

Automotive customizers and builders are artists in every sense of the word, which means many of them aren't going to appeal to mainstream tastes. I have a feeling that the artist behind this one of a kind fiberglass convertible built on a Henry J chassis with Corvette components had no intention of speaking to the masses. Fresh out of 50 plus years of storage, this current owner of this unique ride is hoping someone perusing the galleries of Detroit Craigslist will pony up $7,500 to add this to their collection. Aside from its appearance, the thing that sticks out most about this build is that they used Corvette components, but all the "wrong" ones. I'm going to assume that the 1956 Corvette that donated its windshield, dash, steering wheel, soft top and other pieces was likely a...

Future Collectible – 1984 Subaru GL Wagon

In the 1980s, Subaru claimed their four-wheel-drive GL wagon was the perfect car for climbing mountains and the social ladder. Unfortunately, the specimen we have here is front-wheel-drive. Nonetheless, the seller believes they've proven that two wheels are as good as four when it comes to their 1984 Subaru GL Wagon for sale on Craiglist outside of Chicago. They state that it was driven from Washington state to Illinois last fall, and that their little wagon "took the mountains in stride." Having made this drive on several occasions, I can say that this is quite a feat for a 36 year old car. Subaru must have done its research, at least in regard to the mountain part. At $3,400 could this Subaru be your future collectible? Featuring an astonishing 72 horsepower four-banger connecte...

Dusty & Rusty – 1957 Corvette

In 1957 the average monthly rent in the US was $90 and a dozen eggs would set you back 28 cents, which was four cents more than a gallon of gas. At 24 cents a gallon, it would have cost you a whopping $3.84 to fill up the 16 gallon tank on your new 1957 Corvette, such as this one found here on Craigslist outside of Dayton, Ohio. This dusty and rusty C1 Corvette for sale was originally $3,465 when new, but is now listed for $47,000. it is a runner, but is it a stunner? I guess that depends on if you're on #TeamPatina or #TeamRestore. 1957 Corvette for sale in Ohio The 1957 Corvette was unchanged visually from the year prior, but Chevy did boost the cubic inches on the V8 from 265 to 283, which was the only engine for the year. While fuel injection became an option (a spendy one), th...

Dusty & Rusty – 1949 Ford V8

If you happened to stroll into the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City in June of 1948, you may have been among the earliest to lay eyes on the first all new car from the American Big Three since the end of World War II. The 1949 Ford design completely changed the way automakers designed cars around the world, as it ushered in an era of integrated fenders and flat sides. A hit with consumers, Ford built their basic transportation as sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes, such as this V8 example found on Craigslist in Northern Alabama, for what appears to be a deal at just $3,500. The 1949 Ford for sale in this ad is said to be a complete car that includes its V8 and 3 speed transmission. Unfortunately, the seller mentions that they purchased it a few years ago and heard that i...

Dusty & Rusty – 1936 Dodge Touring Sedan

Mid depression era vehicles have always been fascinating to me. At a time when the nation, and much of the world, was suffering inconceivably, many automakers never yielded in their attempt to make a statement. While people lost their jobs and their livelyhood, cars of the era were were stuffed with bells and whistles, lots of chrome, big grilles, couch-like interiors and a lovely AOOGA horn . Nothing like a big, honking car. That's exactly what we have here with the sad looking 1936 Dodge Brothers D2 Touring Sedan that is said to have been saved from the crusher. Having seen many times that much of the world would love to forget, I think this old Dodge deserves a second chance, what about you? While in dire need of -- pretty much everything -- this D2 is fairly complete, minus a ...

Dusty & Rusty – Halloween special – 1964 Chevrolet C10 Panel Truck

Tired of the same ole haunted houses for Halloween? Maybe try this haunted AF truck! For only $575 you can snag this creepy-not-so-crawly 1964 Chevrolet panel truck out of Jackson, Mississippi, which may or may not be the inspiration for Stephen King’s next novel. This windowless Suburban is perfect for your next chainsaw massacre!  Now that the pitch is out of the way, let’s dive in.This non-running and ghoulish rig is said to be all there, just in poor shape. I’d say the seller pretty much nailed that description, and it’s basically the only thoughts given by them. So, for just over half a grand, would you put a skeleton in the driver’s seat and call Halloween a success? When the holiday is over this could make for an interesting winter project. Probably a few winters hon...

Dusty & Rusty – 1949 Chevrolet 3100

As the world healed from World War II, American automotive factories refocused production from military to civilian for the first time since early 1942. While many automakers wouldn't offer a brand new design for the sedans and coupes until 1949, four years after the war ended, Chevrolet was an early player in postwar styling, at least for their trucks. Midway through 1947 Chevrolet debuted the Advanced Design series, available as the 1/2 ton 3100, 3/4 ton 3600 and 1 ton 3800, as well as the heavier-duty Loadmasters. Advertised as larger and more powerful than its predecessors, the series would lead truck sales among US brands from its debut in 1947 until it was replaced in 1955 with little restyling. This Advanced Design 1949 Chevrolet 3100 is offered on Craigslist out of Chesapeake, VA,...
Dusty & Rusty – 1968 Ford Mustang J Code

Dusty & Rusty – 1968 Ford Mustang J Code

If you caught the earlier post about today being the anniversary of the release of Bullitt, then you'll have extra appreciation for this 1968 Ford Mustang fastback that could be the base of your Bullitt tribute car. Midway through 1968 Ford replaced the 289 with a 302, which resulted in the J code in the VIN, a one year listing. The only real difference in the motor was the intake and heads, which were the same ones used on the '66 289, but with updated castings. So while the J code may be rare, it's hardly more than a 289 in an ironed shirt. That's essentially the long winded way of saying, YOU WANT $20,000 FOR THIS? The 1968 Mustang in question after it was pulled from the weeds -- where it looked way cooler This is a serious case of "I know what I have!" While the seller seems to...

Future Collectible – 1981 Jeep Cherokee Chief

If you're in the market for a vehicle's that on the verge of vintage but can still take you just about anywhere, this 1981 Jeep Cherokee may be for you. With wood-paneled Wagoneers of the same era selling for upwards of $20,000, this running and driving four door Cherokee found on Craigslist for $4,250 near St. Louis seems like a bargain, but is it? The Chief package added $349 to the base model price of the Cherokee when introduced in January of 1975, but it appears to have been a solid investment. Aside from some sweet graphics, the package extended the Dana 44 axles by three inches and your new Jeep would come with bigger wheels and wheel cutouts. While a majority of the Cherokee Chiefs were two door, this example offers easy access for the whole family. Outfitted with 2...
