Following nearly four years of internal combustion engine vehicle production, VinFast announced it would focus exclusively on battery electric vehicles in 2022. The company has since become the first Vietnamese car maker to enter the global market and mass produce EVs. July 6, 1851 – Electric motor inventor dies

The inventor of the battery powered electric motor, Thomas Davenport, passed away on this day in 1851 at the age of 48. Davenport completed his motor in 1834, and received a patent for his invention in 1837. Davenport demonstrated his motor by powering a small car on a short section of track, paving the way to the electrification of street cars. In 1840 he used his invention to print The Electro-Magnetic and Mechanics Intelligencer, the first newspaper printed using electricity. Further development of Davenport’s invention was key in the production of early electric automobiles.

November 14,1996 – GM begins production of its first electric car — then crushes it

On this day in 1996 General Motors launched production of its first mass produced electric car, the EV1. Manufactured in Lansing, Michigan, the EV1 had a range of 70-90 miles before requiring a recharge. More than 1,100 EV1s were produced for lease testing between 1996 and 1999, making it the first mass produced electric car from a major automaker in nearly a century.
