Steal your mom’s keys, throw in a cassette and lose hubcaps on late night 100-mph screams down the freeway in this 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix on craigslist, perfectly preserved in a luscious mint color. Do they call it Miami mint? They probably didn’t, but we will now, given the car’s location. This could certainly be the best $8,000 you could spend, right? Right!?
White vinyl over mint green. Smooth hubcaps. Everglades-ready mud flaps. This car is an absolute time capsule back to an era of motoring you wish you could forget. Those chunky glass headlights look completely useless for safety. The chrome bumpers look like they’re ready to knock over small buildings. This car is absolutely flawless even down to the pollutant-tipped exhaust pipe. Those striped brake lights are like a big warning sign for the impending 1980s.
The mint continues inside. From vinyl seats, to the steering wheel to the carpet protector insert on the carpet, this car stays committed to the easter egg paint. The dash has enough vents to cool an airport hangar and the seller notes that the AC runs ice cold. Just imagine that r12 coolant system freezing your fingertips. That’s an experience you can’t get today.
Under the hood it appears salt has just begun it’s work on every unpainted panel. The lining on the hood looks hazardous to your lungs but is almost completely intact. This sad Pontiac V6 won’t turn any heads, but at 59,000 claimed miles this Grand Prix has a few trips around the racetrack left.
For just under $8,000 you could slap a much larger displacement under the hood and scream down the turnpike. But with this car, why bother? I say enjoy this malaise marvel until the wheels, or maybe just the hubcaps, fly into the ditch. Want to see more cheap classic cars for sale on This Day in Automotive History? Here you go!
