South African sports car driver Wayne Taylor was born on this day in 1956. Taylor’s racing career took off after winning the 1986 South African National Drivers Championship. The next year he finished fourth in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Highlights of his racing career included wins at the 1996 and 2005 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 2005 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype drivers’ championship. For the 2007 season Taylor and car builder Bob Riley formed Wayne Taylor Racing. While Taylor continues to race in long distance events but the team features two main drivers, Max Angelelli and Michael Valiante. Taylor’s sons Jordan and Ricky also race for their father’s team.
