On January 22, 1975 Ford Motor Company announced that it would begin selling the Mercury Bobcat in the United States the following March. The Bobcat would be built at Ford’s Metuchen, N. J., plant as a variation of the existing Ford Pinto model. The vehicle would be available in two body styles—a three-door “hatchback” and a station wagon. Ford planned to produce 44,000 Bobcats during the remainder of the 1975 model year. The car had gone on sale in Canada the year prior. In total, 224,026 Bobcats were produced from 1975 until 1980
