August 18, 1999 – Second generation Acura TL is unveiled


On August 18, 1999, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. headquartered in Torrance, California, under the leadership of President Takaichi Amemiya, revealed the eagerly awaited successor to its luxury sedan line, the Acura TL. With its official launch slated for September 3, the 1999 model Acura TL is set to captivate car enthusiasts and luxury aficionados alike. Sporting an array of advancements, including a cutting-edge engine and enhanced features, the new Acura TL offers a remarkable package of opulence and value, all at a compelling starting price of US$27,950 (US$29,950 for the navigation system-equipped version). Honda’s estimations foresee annual sales in the United States to reach an impressive 40,000 vehicles.

The second generation Acura TL brings together refined exterior aesthetics with a commodious and incredibly comfortable interior. With an awe-inspiring maximum output of 225ps, the 3.2-liter V6 6-cylinder engine places the Acura TL at the forefront of its class in terms of performance. The inclusion of an “S-matic” transmission introduces a personalized driving experience by offering both automatic and manual-like settings to cater to individual preferences. Designed to excel on extended journeys, the Acura TL boasts a potent engine, a robust body structure, and a solid chassis, resulting in a harmonious performance that’s characterized by its quality and tranquility. The vehicle also encompasses an array of standard features including anti-lock brakes (ABS), Honda’s traction control system (TCS), and a BOSE sound system, all of which combine to make the Acura TL an embodiment of convenience and driving pleasure.

The production is taking place right within the United States, specifically at the Honda plant situated in Marysville, Ohio. Notably, the entire product planning, engineering, and development for the Acura TL have been meticulously undertaken in the United States, solidifying its status as a true American automobile. Notably, this vehicle’s localization is truly impressive, with over 98% local content achieved, a remarkable feat in Honda’s history.

American Honda is charting new territories with its plans to export around 30,000 units of this model annually to Japan and various parts of Asia. In Japan, the Acura TL is scheduled for a fall launch as the upgraded version of the Inspire/Saber.
