January 17, 2023 – Chevrolet announces hybrid Corvette E-Ray

2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray (Chevrolet)

The Chevrolet Corvette has been an American icon since its introduction in 1953 and will remain so with the introduction of the new hybrid Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray on this day in 2023. As the quintessential American sports car, the ‘Vette has inspired generations of car enthusiasts and has established itself as a symbol of performance and style. The story of the Chevrolet Corvette began in the early 1950s when General Motors (GM) was looking for a way to compete with the popular European sports cars that were gaining popularity in the United States. They decided to create a two-seat roadster powered by a V8 engine and designed with a sleek and aerodynamic body style.

The result was the prototype Chevrolet Corvette that debuted on this day in 1953. It featured a fiberglass body painted in a distinctive Polo White. However, it lacked the V8 and instead received power from a 150 horsepower “Blue Flame” six-cylinder engine connected to a two speed automatic transmission. This configuration would be found in the first 300 production Corvettes.

In 1955, with the introduction of the V8 powered Ford Thunderbird that dominated the Corvette in terms of sales, Chevrolet finally offered a V8 engine and a manual transmission. Throughout the years, the Corvette has undergone many changes and improvements. For example, in 1967, the now-iconic Stingray debuted with a powerful 427 cubic-inch V8 engine under the hood. Fast forward to the 70th anniversary of the Corvette and we are meeting the first hybrid Chevrolet Corvette, the Corvette E-Ray

The Hybrid Gas Electric Corvette

(Chevrolet)

The all-new 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, announced by Chevrolet on this day in 2023, is the latest incarnation of the iconic American sports car. The E-Ray features a gas-electric hybrid powertrain that gives it a 0-60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds. It is undoubtedly one of the quickest production cars in the world. An LT2 V8 and a 160 horsepower electric motor that spins the front wheels power the E-Ray, producing a combined total of 665hp. This pushes the E-Ray to a top speed of about 180 mph. Good to know: the 1.9 kWh battery pack allows the Corvette E-Ray to travel at a max speed of about 45 mph on electric power alone for short distances. Chevrolet calls this Stealth Mode.
