October 10, 2010 – Chrysler announces the end of the Grand Caravan

After seeing a decrease in sales in the zero-sex appeal Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Corporation announced  first on this day in 2010 that the iconic minivan would be discontinued after the 2013 model year. When the time came, the plug wasn’t pulled, but in 2014 they again said that van would be sent off to a nice big farm where it could run around with Plymouths following the 2016 model year. The ticker is up and the van is still alive, for now anyway. It will be produced alongside the swanky Chrysler Pacifica minivan as a lower cost model through at least 2017. After being fired from Ford and having the idea for the minivan rejected by Henry Ford II, Lee Iacocca brought the idea to Chrysler after being hired as chairman in 1979. The Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager introduced the United States and much of the world to the Minivan in November 1983. Chrysler minivans have outsold all other minivans every year since. Pics1986 Dodge Caravan at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History – public domain2011 Dodge Grand Caravan – public domain
