Wow! Whether you’re a passive auto enthusiast or a diehard gear head, chances are you’ve heard of the legendary car collection owned by the Sultan of Brunei. Hassanal Bolkiah Muiz’zaddin Wad’daulah has been the Sultan of Brunei since 1967, and prime minister of the small country in the Pacific since its independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. He is one of the few remaining absolute monarchs in the world and he has used (abused?) his power to amass perhaps the world’s largest car collection. Despite owning multiple examples of the world’s most exclusive vehicles, he does not necessarily parade them around and the collection has remained quite private over the years. Until now.
An Instagram account @brunei_cars_2001 has began leaking photos from an apparent visit to the collection in 2001. Who the poster is has not been determined and we may not find out, but we do get to peek inside this vast selection of vehicles. The Sultan has used the riches from the tiny of the tiny 2200 square mile country’s oil and gas reserves to squirrel away thousands of cars. There are an untold number of Ferraris and Mercedes-Benzes, many painted in a matching yellow (whatever floats your boat). One of those yellow cars is a Ferrari 456GT Estate. Yeah, a Ferrari wagon. A four-door Ferrari station wagon. That does not exist. The Sultan has like seven of them.
But there is also a variety of vehicles you wouldn’t expect to find in such a wealthy collection. Take for example a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It appears to be a late 1990s version and in 2001 it only had 700 miles on it. Chances are the odometer hasn’t moved much. Speaking of SUVs, there is a Toyota RAV4 and there is also a Bentley that SUV from the 1990s that was specially made for this guy, also finished in yellow. Then there is a 1993 Bugatti EB110 SS, one of four that got delivered to this guy.
It isn’t exactly clear who is leaking the photos, but digging through the comments sections it sounds like at some point they were stolen by an employee of the company that owned them. Vague! In any case, the aforementioned Instagram account dumped a Google drive link to thousands more photographs. Thankfully they are neatly organized by make, including Porsche, Acura, BMW, Lamborghini, Rollys-Royce and more. Check it out here. All photos on this page are posted on instagram.com/brunei_cars_2001.
It’s widely believed that a majority of the collection has rotted away due to poor storage conditions. The air in Brunei is apparently not kind to multi million dollar cars. This snapshot may be the best evidence of what the collection once was. Head to the Instagram account for more of the dump! Remember, drive history every day!
