1928 – Opel’s Rocket Car Flies Down the Rails

Automotive experimentation reached new heights on this day in 1928 when an Opel RAK rail rocket car was strapped to railroad tracks near Celle, Germany. Powered by 10 solid-fuel rockets, the first run reached an astonishing 180 mph (290 km/h), making it one of the fastest land vehicles of its era.
