When Volkswagen quietly skipped the 2026 model year for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz in the United States, many enthusiasts feared the retro-inspired electric van was already headed toward extinction. Sales had not matched the enormous hype surrounding the vehicle’s launch, and critics questioned whether Americans truly wanted a six-figure electric reinterpretation of the beloved VW Bus.

Now, Volkswagen says the ID. Buzz is returning for 2027 with updated technology, revised trims, and a stronger focus on lifestyle-oriented buyers. Among the biggest additions is a new Tourer model designed specifically for camping and overnight travel, complete with a fold-out mattress, removable window blinds, ventilation panels, and software-based “Overnight Mode” settings intended to make the vehicle more usable for road trips and extended stays. The updated 2027 ID. Buzz lineup will also include Volkswagen’s latest infotainment software, new wheel and color options, and support for one-pedal driving, one of the most commonly requested features from owners. Volkswagen is also adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS), giving the ID. Buzz access to Tesla-style charging compatibility moving forward.

The ID. Buzz was never meant to be just another electric vehicle. From the beginning, Volkswagen positioned it as an emotional flagship—a modern reinterpretation of one of the most culturally significant vehicles the company ever produced. The challenge, however, has been balancing nostalgia with the realities of the modern automotive market.

The vehicle generated enormous excitement when first shown as a concept in 2017, with many longtime enthusiasts hoping Volkswagen had finally captured the spirit of the original Microbus for a new generation. But once the production version reached North America for the 2025 model year, reactions became more complicated. Many buyers praised the design, interior openness, and personality, but criticized the vehicle’s pricing and real-world range. The history of the Volkswagen Bus stretches back to 1950, when Volkswagen introduced the original Type 2 Transporter, commonly known as the Microbus or VW Bus.
