Karl Benz Invented a Car the World Wasn’t Sure It Needed

Karl Benz did not invent the first self-propelled road vehicle. Steam-powered machines had existed for decades. What made his Patent-Motorwagen revolutionary was that Benz designed the engine, chassis and drivetrain together as a purpose-built gasoline automobile rather than attaching a motor to an existing carriage. Completed in 1885, the three-wheeled machine used a rear-mounted single-cylinder four-stroke engine producing less than one horsepower. Benz filed patent No. 37435 on January 29, 1886, a document the German Patent and Trademark Office now describes as essentially the birth certificate of the automobile.

The invention did not immediately set the world on fire. Benz publicly demonstrated his first Motorwagen in July 1886 and received newspaper coverage, but the public remained skeptical that a noisy, fragile-looking machine without a horse could become useful transportation. That mattered because Benz was not working alone. Bertha Benz had invested her own dowry in her future husband’s early business and supported his engineering work through financially precarious years. By 1888, she had watched him create something extraordinary while struggling to convince other people why they needed it. Karl Benz may have invented the modern car, but it’d be Bertha who would prove its value.

Bertha Turned the Motorwagen Into a 100-Kilometer Product Test

On August 5, 1888, Bertha decided to demonstrate the car herself. Without telling Karl, she left Mannheim before dawn in an improved Patent-Motorwagen No. 3 with their teenage sons Eugen and Richard. Their destination was Bertha’s hometown of Pforzheim, more than 100 kilometers away. It became the first long-distance automobile journey in history. Remarkably, Karl had received what is often described as the world’s first driving permit only four days earlier. Bertha had no such permission.

The trip became an accidental preview of almost every inconvenience early motorists would face. Bertha bought ligroin fuel from a pharmacy in Wiesloch, turning it into what is often called the world’s first filling station. She reportedly cleared a blocked fuel line with her hatpin and used a garter to repair insulation. A blacksmith repaired the drive chain, while a cobbler added leather to the brake blocks, an early step toward replaceable brake linings. Cooling water had to be collected repeatedly from wells, inns and roadside sources. On steep hills, Bertha and her sons sometimes had to push. After more than 12 hours over largely unpaved roads, they reached Pforzheim.

Bertha Benz Didn’t Just Prove the Car Worked, She Improved It

Bertha’s journey accomplished something a short demonstration never could. It showed that an automobile could actually transport ordinary people from one city to another without engineers following alongside. It also exposed weaknesses that laboratory testing had not solved. One of her most important observations concerned gearing. The Motorwagen struggled badly on hills, and Bertha urged Karl to add another gear. He incorporated the lesson into later development.

More importantly, the trip gave Benz something his patent could not: a story the public could understand. Here was a woman and two teenagers traveling more than 100 kilometers using a machine many people had dismissed as impractical. Mercedes-Benz today credits the journey as a decisive catalyst in the growth of Benz & Cie., which eventually became the world’s largest automobile manufacturer of its era. By 1894, the Benz Velo had reached production of roughly 1,200 examples, making it one of the first automobiles built in genuinely significant numbers.

Karl Benz deserves his place in automotive history for engineering the practical gasoline automobile. But inventions do not change the world simply because they work. Someone has to prove why people should care. In 1888, Bertha Benz did exactly that.
