Oldsmobile Builds a 1,000-HP Four-Cylinder Streamliner

In the mid-1980s, Oldsmobile wanted the world to take its new Quad 4 engine seriously. A dual-overhead-cam, 16-valve four-cylinder was sophisticated stuff for a Detroit automaker at the time, but putting one in a Cutlass brochure wasn’t going to make anyone forget Ferrari or Porsche. So Oldsmobile took a considerably more dramatic approach: it built the Aerotech, a carbon-fiber streamliner designed to chase world speed records. Underneath Ed Welburn’s remarkably slippery body was a modified March 84C IndyCar chassis. Behind the driver sat a 2.0-liter racing development of the Quad 4 producing roughly 900 to 1,000 horsepower with turbocharging.

There were two primary configurations. The short-tail Aerotech emphasized stability and downforce and used a single-turbo engine developed by Batten Engineering. The sleeker long-tail Aerotech used twin turbos from Feuling Engineering and was designed to minimize drag at extreme speed. Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt was recruited to drive them. The combination worked almost immediately: during early testing, the short-tail exceeded 200 mph on its first outing and eventually reached 218 mph even while running reduced boost. Oldsmobile then hauled the cars to Firestone’s enormous 7.7-mile oval near Fort Stockton, Texas, to find out just how fast they could really go.

A.J. Foyt Takes the Aerotech Past 267 MPH

On August 27, 1987, the Aerotech delivered the publicity Oldsmobile wanted. Foyt drove the short-tail car to a closed-course speed record of 257.123 mph, surpassing a 250.918-mph mark established by a Mercedes-Benz prototype at Nardò in 1979. Then came the long-tail. Over the measured flying mile, Foyt averaged an extraordinary 267.399 mph in opposite-direction runs, establishing another world record in the 2.0-liter class. On one leg, the Aerotech was clocked at 278.357 mph. Contemporary reports said Foyt was seeing roughly 290 mph on parts of the track, where the limitations of the oval itself became nearly as important as the power of the car. That number becomes even stranger when viewed in context. This wasn’t a V12 exotic or a massive-displacement land-speed special. It was an Oldsmobile powered by a four-cylinder engine whose basic architecture was being promoted for ordinary production cars.

The Aerotech’s engines were obviously far removed from showroom Quad 4s, but that was part of the point: Oldsmobile wanted to demonstrate how much potential existed in the design. The records generated enormous publicity, and Aerotech imagery soon appeared at auto shows, in advertisements and even on miniature promotional go-karts displayed at Oldsmobile dealerships. Road & Track reported in 2025 that Foyt’s closed-course achievement remained unbroken nearly four decades later.

Then Oldsmobile Came Back and Broke 47 More Records

Five years later, Oldsmobile returned to Fort Stockton with an entirely different mission. The upcoming Aurora luxury sedan would use a new 4.0-liter DOHC V8, and Aerotech was revived to prove that engine’s durability. The cars gained headlights, taillights and other equipment necessary to run around the clock. Rather than chasing one spectacular maximum-speed number, teams of motorsports drivers circulated the Texas oval day and night in brutal winter conditions, often maintaining speeds around 180 mph for hours at a time. One Aerotech crashed after striking an animal at more than 150 mph, yet the program continued. By the time snow finally stopped the effort in December 1992, the Aurora-powered Aerotechs had accumulated 47 speed and endurance records. Among the biggest were FIA world records for 10,000 kilometers at 170.761 mph and 25,000 kilometers at 158.386 mph—the latter equivalent to covering more than 15,500 miles at an average speed approaching 160 mph.

Oldsmobile’s chief engineer compared it to running roughly 31 Indianapolis 500s back-to-back. The accomplishments ranged from shorter-distance marks to multi-hour endurance records, giving Oldsmobile unusually dramatic evidence that its new V8 could survive sustained punishment. The Aerotech story has gained another chapter in recent years. While GM retained some of the record cars, other Aerotech bodies, molds, engines and components were long believed lost. Enthusiast Matthew Katz eventually located a remarkable cache of original material in storage in Arizona. By 2025, restorations of the original Quad 4 short-tail and long-tail cars were nearing completion, along with another endurance Aerotech, and there were plans to eventually run the long-tail again with Larry Foyt, A.J.’s son, behind the wheel. Nearly twenty years after Oldsmobile itself disappeared, the machines it built to prove its engineering credentials are still around—and some of the records they set are, too.
