Comedian Robby Hoffman is known for sharp, high-energy storytelling, and on a recent episode of SmartLess, she turned a simple question about her dream car into something funny, emotional, and deeply car-person specific. Hoffman is an Emmy-winning writer, actor, and stand-up comedian whose credits include Workin’ Moms, Baroness Von Sketch Show, and The Chris Gethard Show. But when Sean Hayes asked her about cars, she revealed another obsession: Porsche.
Hoffman called herself a car person, but more specifically a Porsche person, and the reason goes back to her father. She described growing up poor with a dad who loved Porsche, then recalled how, after her family fell apart, he bought himself an old Porsche 944 instead of paying child support. He even sent a picture of himself in it to her mother, as if to say, “See what you’re giving up?” Hoffman’s reaction was complicated and hilarious in the way only real family stories can be: she thought he was a deadbeat, but she also thought he looked pretty cool. Both things, she admitted, could be true.
That tension is what makes the story more than a celebrity car anecdote. Hoffman said she does not have a relationship with her father now, but Porsche gives her a strange, imperfect way to feel connected to him. It is not ideal, as she put it, but it is not nothing either.
From a $3,600 Corolla to a 2001 Porsche 911
The best part is that Hoffman did not simply buy a dream car the moment she could afford one. She described a relatable, almost enthusiast-approved ladder of careful used-car moves. Her first car was a 1983 Toyota Corolla liftback that she bought for $3,600 cash. After COVID-era collector interest pushed values up on oddball older cars, she sold it for $6,000. That profit became her way into Porsche ownership.
With that $6,000, Hoffman bought her first Porsche, a used Cayman for $13,000. She joked that she found the Cayman “abysmal,” but the numbers worked. After subtracting what she had from the Corolla, she was effectively climbing into a Porsche for another $7,000. Then she sold the Cayman for $18,000 and used that toward her true dream car: a 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera, the 996 generation, finished in black with a tan interior. The car cost $28,000, meaning her next step up was another $10,000.
That is what makes the story land. Hoffman’s 911 was not framed as a flashy purchase. It was something she worked toward one used car at a time, turning a Corolla into a Cayman and a Cayman into the Porsche she always wanted. At the end of the exchange, Will Arnett joked that Jason Bateman is also a Porsche person and has had “100 Porsches,” which immediately made Hoffman want to talk cars with him. There really is some sort of link between comedians and Porsches, isn’t there? At least she didn’t buy a four-door Porsche.
