
By 2004, Chrysler had already spent more than a decade proving that American concept cars could be outrageous. The Viper had gone from show-car fantasy to production reality. The Plymouth Prowler had turned a hot-rod sketch into a dealer-lot curiosity. The Dodge Tomahawk had arrived in 2003 looking like a V10-powered motorcycle from another planet. But when Chrysler unveiled the ME Four-Twelve at the Detroit auto show in January 2004, it was aiming at something much bigger than spectacle.
The project was kept unusually secret, even inside Chrysler. Design chief Trevor Creed described it as a deliberate follow-up to the Tomahawk, but with a key difference: the Tomahawk was mostly a design statement, while the ME Four-Twelve was intended to be an engineering statement. Chrysler wanted to show that it could build a legitimate mid-engine supercar capable of standing beside, or even ahead of, the fastest machines from Europe. The timing mattered. Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz were all pushing performance harder, while Bugatti was struggling to bring the Veyron to production. Chrysler decided to enter that conversation with a car nobody saw coming. After all, Chrysler history shows it as a relatively quaint automaker.
The name explained the formula: mid-engine, four turbochargers, twelve cylinders. Yet even that undersold how extreme the car was. Chrysler claimed the ME Four-Twelve went from idea to completed vehicle in less than a year, using a combination of in-house engineering and outside specialists. Instead of building a fiberglass shell around fantasy specifications, the company produced a running machine that was meant to prove the numbers were possible.
Four Turbos and 850 Horsepower

Mounted behind the passenger compartment was a 6.0-liter all-aluminum V12 developed by AMG and fitted with four turbochargers. Output was rated at 850 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque, figures that were almost absurd for a road car in 2004. Chrysler projected 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, 0 to 100 in 6.2, a quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds at 142 mph and a top speed of 248 mph. For context, those numbers put the ME Four-Twelve into territory occupied by cars costing extraordinary sums, and in some cases ahead of them on paper.
The rest of the car was built to match the engine. Carbon-fiber body panels covered a carbon-fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque. A specially developed seven-speed Ricardo dual-clutch transmission sent power to the rear wheels, while carbon-ceramic brakes, pushrod suspension and extensive aerodynamic work suggested Chrysler was thinking well beyond the auto-show floor. An active rear spoiler moved rearward at speed to increase downforce, while the underbody and diffuser were shaped to help keep the car stable as it approached 200 mph and beyond.
That combination made the ME Four-Twelve feel especially radical in its era. Dual-clutch gearboxes, active aerodynamics, carbon structures and 800-plus horsepower would later become familiar ingredients in hypercars. In 2004, putting all of them together in something wearing a Chrysler wing badge was almost surreal.
This Was Supposed to Be More Than a Concept

What made the ME Four-Twelve particularly intriguing was how seriously Chrysler talked about building it. Company executives were not shy about suggesting production was possible. Wolfgang Bernhard, Chrysler’s chief operating officer and former AMG boss, reportedly insisted the car was a prototype rather than just a concept. Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche said the company would love to build it because of what it could do for the brand.
That distinction mattered. Detroit had a long history of displaying impossible dream cars, but the ME Four-Twelve was engineered with the sort of detail normally reserved for something expected to move under its own power. Period reports suggested Chrysler wanted to challenge the developing Bugatti Veyron for the title of world’s fastest production car, and the company clearly believed the car could become a halo product far beyond anything else in its lineup.
Then it disappeared from the production conversation. The economics of building an exotic carbon-fiber supercar were daunting, DaimlerChrysler had larger corporate problems to solve, and the business case for putting an 850-horsepower Chrysler into showrooms never materialized. The car remained a prototype, and one of Detroit’s most ambitious performance projects of the era quietly became a historical footnote, much like Cadillac’s supercar concept of the era.
