July 21, 2013 – Andrea Antonelli dies at Moscow Raceway

Italian moto racer Andrea Antonelli died on this day at Moscow Raceway during the Supersport World Championship while riding for Team Go Eleven Kawasaki. Antonelli’s first major race circuit was the Italian 125cc Championship, where he became the second youngest ever race winner, behind Marco Melandri. He graduated to the European Superstock 600 Championship in 2005, and in 2007 he was runner up to Maxime Berger. He then moved on to Superstock 1000 Championship with team Lorini Honda, where he spent four seasons. He peaked at 4th overall in 2010. He and Lorini moved into the Supersport World Championship for the 2012 season, but he left the team to join Bike Service Yamaha midseason. In 2013 he moved to Team Go Eleven Kawasaki. Both Antonelli and the team had their best ever results early in the season, which included a fourth-place finish at Motorland Aragón and a fourth place start at Moscow Raceway.
On this day in 2013 at the Moscow Raceway during a 2013 Supersport World Championship season race Antonelli fell in the rain and was hit by another racer, causing him severe head trauma. He later died of his injuries.
