1889 – Archibald Frazer-Nash Is Born
British engineer and automobile designer Archibald Goodman Frazer Nash was born on this day in 1889 in Hyderabad, then part of British India. Working with H.R. Godfrey, he helped establish GN, a manufacturer known for lightweight cyclecars, before founding Frazer Nash in 1923. The company’s agile, chain-driven sports cars earned a reputation in competition and became prized for their unusual engineering and responsive handling. Frazer Nash later expanded his work beyond automobiles, developing equipment and technology for the aviation industry.
1953 – The First Production Corvette Is Built

America’s most enduring sports car entered production on this day in 1953 when the first customer-bound Chevrolet Corvette was completed in Flint, Michigan. The car had been unveiled as a concept at General Motors’ Motorama earlier that year, where its fiberglass body and European-inspired appearance generated enough enthusiasm to secure a limited production run. Chevrolet built only 300 Corvettes for 1953, all finished in Polo White with red interiors and powered by a 235-cubic-inch “Blue-Flame” inline-six paired with a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Although its early performance was modest, the Corvette soon gained V8 power and evolved into an American performance icon.
1956 – Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari Dies at 24

Alfredo Ferrari, the son of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari, died on this day in 1956 at just 24 years old. Better known as Dino, the young engineer had been involved in developing a new V6 engine before illness overtook him. His death deeply affected Enzo, who later used the Dino name on a series of racing engines and smaller sports cars. Beginning in the late 1960s, models such as the Dino 206 GT and 246 GT helped Ferrari enter a new segment while preserving the memory of the founder’s son.
1975 – Formula One Winner Ralf Schumacher Is Born
German racing driver Ralf Schumacher was born on this day in 1975 in Hürth, West Germany. The younger brother of seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher, Ralf reached Formula One in 1997 with Jordan before moving to Williams and later Toyota. He earned six Grand Prix victories during his career, including three wins during the 2001 season. Although inevitably compared with his older brother, Ralf established his own successful record in international motorsport and later competed in the German DTM touring-car series.
2000 – Ford Completes Its Purchase of Land Rover

Ford Motor Company officially completed its acquisition of Land Rover from BMW on this day in 2000. The deal, valued at approximately three billion euros, included the Land Rover product line along with its engineering and manufacturing operations. Ford placed the British four-wheel-drive specialist within its Premier Automotive Group, joining luxury brands that included Jaguar, Aston Martin and Volvo. Under Ford ownership, Land Rover introduced new generations of the Range Rover, Discovery and Range Rover Sport before Ford sold Land Rover and Jaguar to Tata Motors in 2008.
