February 27, 1951 – Italian auto designer Walter de Silva is born

At just 21 years old, Italian Walter de Silva began a career as an automotive designe at Fiat in 1972. Born on this day in 1951, de Silva would go on to lead design for Alfa Romeo, SEAT, Audi and finally Volkswagen Group. He reigned at VW from 2007 until 2015. October 12, 1868 – Audi founder is born

On this day in 1868 in the village of Winningen, Rhenish Prussia, August Horch came into the world, and with him, a future bright in automotive engineering and a lasting legacy. After receiving a degree in engineering, Horch worked for Karl Benz from 1896 until he founded A. Horch & Co. in 1899 in Cologne, Germany, desiring to build his own cars. Following a dispute with investors Horch left his own company and set up a competing automaker, this time called Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH. Legal action soon denied him use of the Horch name on his new vehicles, as it was still a registered trademark of his former partners. April 25, 2001 – Michele Alboreto killed while testing Audi R8

Italian race car driver Michele Alboreto died on this day in 2001 during a test drive of an Audi R8 when he blew a tire during straight line speed tests, resulting in a fatal crash. Alboreto competed in Formula One from 1981 until 1994, racing for a number of different teams. This included five seasons with Ferrari between 1984 and 1988. In 1985 he placed second in the Formula One World Championship behind Alain Prost, but would go on to achieve numerous victories throughout his racing career.
